#ibmcsc China 30
IBM has a wonderful leadership development program called the Corporate Service Corps (CSC) that sends a team of 10-15 individuals from different countries to an emerging market to work on community based assignments.
I read about this program in 2012 and found it extremely interesting. The idea of working with a diverse team with different cultural backgrounds and professional experiences makes it interesting and challenging. I tried applying for the program in 2012 and started filling the application form. However, somehow, I did not complete the application. I must admit that I became lazy and found the questions too intimidating to answer. The CSC application form is quite extensive with multiple essay type questions. By the time I got back to the application, the timeline had already passed.
Next year, in 2013, I received a mail notification that the CSC applications are open again and I did not waste any time this time. I got the application form filled and reviewed by my colleages before submitting it for my manager's approval and recommendation. Luckily, the selectors found my answers and my profile interesting enough to select me for the program :)
Now the wait for the assignment starts! I read the CSC blog and got to know that it can take a while to get a location and project assigned to you as the CSC team has to match each profile to the projects available and then also take care of the individual's location preferences.
Unfortunately, I did not get the assignment for another year and I kept checking the CSC community for more information.
And then the big news arrived....no...not the CSC assignment, but the news that I am going to be a dad :D :D
I requested the CSC team to hold my assignment for one more year so that I can take care of my wife during her pregnancy. Our little angel arrived in Jan 2015...YAY!!!
I also received my CSC assignment details in May 2015 and I was assigned to the China 30 Team! Though it was not my preferrred location but I realized that it will be even more interesting than an assignment in Latin American or Africa as the language and cultural differences are even wider in China. The location for the project is Xi'an (Home of the Terracotta Warriors) which is a tourist place and one of the most interesting cities in China.
I also got to know the names and details of my team members and the preparations for the assignment started in the third week of May...
More details in my following post....
